Comprehensive new Action Plan to boost road safety
Tuesday, 31 December 2024
An increased focus on road safety education headlines a refreshed South Australia’s Road Safety Action Plan.
The first annual update of annual changes to the State Government’s rolling Action Plan sets out refreshed actions to achieve the target to reduce lives lost by 50 per cent and serious injures by 30 per cent by 2031.
It takes into account the outcomes of the Road Safety Action Plan Annual Report, published in May this year, which presented a 12-month snapshot of achievements and progress against the Action Plan’s ten priority areas.
Changes include the introduction of time-based speed limits of 40km/h on priority main roads near schools to protect some the state’s most vulnerable road users. The Action Plan also highlights the need to increase community awareness and understanding of the road rules.
The State Government will complete the delivery of a managed motorway between the Tollgate and Crafers on the South Eastern Freeway to improve safety as well as progressing state-based measures to improve heavy vehicle licencing arrangements.
The Action Plan also lays out a renewed commitment to South Australia Police’s delivery of road safety campaigns alongside the THINK! Road Safety partnerships program delivering road safety messages directly into community groups and through high-profile sporting organisations.
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport will continue to deliver community-based programs such as Way2Go which promotes safer, greener and more active travel for primary school students and the Aboriginal road safety and driver licensing program On The Right Track.
With regional South Australians continuing to be over-represented in road trauma statistics, the State Government has put a spotlight on the importance of shoulder sealing and curve widening projects as well as safety barrier installation and Audio Tactile Line Marking on regional roads.
Sadly, 117 people lost their life and there were 824 serious injuries in road crashes across South Australia last year. This was the highest number of lives lost in a single year since 2011.
