New straddle carrier for Beachport boatyard

A new straddle carrier at the busy Beachport boatyard will boost productivity and support the state’s commercial fishing industry.
The State Government has contracted Crib Point Engineering Pty Ltd to build a new straddle carrier with capability to lift and move commercial fishing vessels up to 17.8 metres long and 5.4 metres wide.
The new machine will have a lifting capacity of up to 60 tonnes and will be able to lift boats from the existing boat trailer.
It is expected the straddle carrier will be delivered and in operation at the Beachport boatyard by April 2025.
More than 30 professional vessels currently operate out of the south-east yard, with many more from along the coast using the dry dock for maintenance each winter.
The new carrier will replace the existing machine which was decommissioned in early 2022 following safety concerns found during a routine inspection.
Since that time, commercial fishing boats have been launched, retrieved, and moved around the boatyard by crane.
Until the new straddle carrier is operational, commercial fishers will continue accessing the crane to launch, retrieve and move boats around the boatyard at no extra cost.
