Strategic upgrade puts remote Aboriginal community on the highway to improved access and safety

Work is underway at a key intersection along the Eyre Highway in South Australia’s far west to deliver safer journeys along the crucial freight route.

The project at the junction of the Eyre Highway and Micky Free Lawrie Drive is being jointly funded under the Australian and South Australian governments' $297 million commitment of the Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) initiative. 

The works are part of the wider $94 million Eyre Highway Corridor Upgrade, stretching from Port Augusta to the Western Australian border, with the Australian Government contributing $75.2 million and the South Australian government $18.8 million.

Located approximately 34 kilometres west of Ceduna, Micky Free Lawrie Drive provides access for the more than 200 people who reside in the Aboriginal community of Koonibba.  

The upgrades will include construction of a protected right-turn lane onto Micky Free Lawrie Drive from the highway, widening the road aprons on the adjacent Trowbridge Road and resurfacing sections of the highway around the intersection.

Experienced construction firm BMD Constructions Pty Ltd has been awarded the tender to complete the project. Works are expected to be complete later this year.
