Works ongoing to complete three lower Eyre Peninsula overtaking lanes
Wednesday, 25 January 2023
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport advises that works will continue over the coming months to complete three new overtaking lanes on the lower Eyre Peninsula.
The overtaking lanes, which form part of the Australian and South Australian governments’ $51.25 million commitment to upgrade Lower Eyre Peninsula roads under the Roads of Strategic Importance initiative, are being constructed at the following locations:
- Lincoln Highway (northbound), near Louth Bay.
- Flinders Highway (southbound), at the junction with Tod Highway.
- Western Approach Road (southbound), at the junction with Pine Freezers Road near Port Lincoln.
All works on the overtaking lanes are expected to be completed in mid-2023.
Lincoln Highway overtaking lane near Louth Bay
Works to apply the final seal on the Lincoln Highway overtaking lane commenced in the week commencing Monday, 16 January 2023, weather permitting, and are expected to be completed by the end of January 2023.
The Lincoln Highway overtaking lane will reopen to traffic following the completion of this work, with minor finishing works including line marking to follow.
In the meantime, both directions of traffic are currently diverted onto the northbound carriageway with speed restrictions in place.
Flinders Highway overtaking lane at the junction with Tod Highway
Repairs on the Flinders Highway overtaking lane commenced in December 2022, however were unable to be completed due to inclement weather.
The overtaking lane is currently closed with both directions of traffic diverted onto the adjacent northbound carriageway with speed restrictions in place.
Repair works will resume in late January 2023, with the overtaking lane reopened to traffic with speed restrictions in place.
Further repair and finishing works will be undertaken once harvest has been completed. Further temporary lane closures will be required while these works are undertaken.
Western Approach Road overtaking lane at the junction with Pine Freezers Road near Port Lincoln
The Western Approach Road overtaking lane is now open to traffic with speed restrictions in place and the Department is closely monitoring the road condition, following works undertaken in December 2022.
Due to hot weather and grain carting, excess bitumen is coming to the surface in the outer wheel path. Therefore, some temporary works will be undertaken in the week commencing Monday, 16 January 2023, with minor finishing works including line marking expected to be undertaken following harvest.
The contractor for the construction of the three overtaking lanes is responsible for completing all works.
Road users are asked to please plan ahead, expect delays, allow extra travel time and take extra care when workers are on site. Observe speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controllers when travelling through the area.
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport thanks the community for their cooperation and patience while these important works are undertaken.
