Port Pirie Wharf upgrades to provide economic boost to the Mid North

Nearly 20,000 square metres of asphalt works completed within the Port Pirie Wharf precinct will support grain handling and export, providing an economic boost for the region.

The completed asphalt works on the previously unsealed area will enable the new grain handling terminal at Flinders Ports, Port Pirie, to obtain bio-security clearance to export locally grown grain to the world.

As a result, grain growers in the state’s Mid North will no longer have to transport their crop to Port Adelaide via road, saving transport time and cost.

Approximately 19,350 square metres of previously unsurfaced port area within the Port Pirie Wharf precinct was sealed with 6,100 tonnes of asphalt as part of the Title H Port Pirie Site Remediation Project, undertaken by the Port Wakefield to Port Augusta (PW2PA) Alliance on behalf of the Department for Infrastructure and Transport. A large portion of the works focused on Berths 5 and 7.

As part of these works, 8,800 tonnes of contaminated material were removed from the site, with 1,960 tonnes of clean fill reused along with 9,100 tonnes of new material.

The upgraded berths will also support growing container shipping operations at the port.
