Maintenance teams to assess outback roads after heavy rains

Maintenance teams will begin assessing a number of rain-affected roads in the State’s far north from later today, to plan for a safe re-opening of key routes as quickly as possible.

Some roads have already been re-opened to four-wheel drive vehicles, including Mt Dare to Hamilton and sections of the Oodnadatta Track. However, heavy rains and flooded roads have prevented maintenance teams from safely travelling to other outback roads to conduct inspections and check for damage.

Maintenance teams are currently travelling to assess conditions on numerous outback roads from later today, including Coober Pedy to William Creek, Oodnadatta Track (Maree to William Creek) and Birdsville Track (Maree to William Creek).

Depending on the results of these inspections and local weather conditions, targeted grading works will be prioritised to allow the safe passage of supplies to affected communities and return travellers to the sealed road network.

The Department acknowledges that road closures are causing delays and inconvenience for residents and travellers in the region, and is working closely with other agencies, including local councils, to reopen key roads as quickly as possible, while ensuring all road users and staff remain safe.
