Rail Care volunteers celebrated at function

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Rail Care volunteers were  honoured with a special morning tea at the Convention Centre recently as part of National Volunteers Week.

About 200 people attended to have their efforts applauded by Minister for Transport, the Hon Corey Wingard MP and DIT Chief Executive, Tony Braxton-Smith.

Volunteers across Australia make remarkable contributions in all facets of life, donating their labour and expertise to hospitals, charities, support organisations, schools, sports clubs and so on.

Rail Care volunteers are invariably very proud of their suburb and have adopted local railway stations and tram stops to beautify and maintain with the aim to make them welcoming places for their community.

Jobs range from general tidying and graffiti removal to planting and maintaining gardens. There is a real sense of pride, with many people being active Rail Care volunteers for decades.

Long-serving volunteers were recognised at the function by Rail Care Program Manager Roger Agius, who could not speak highly enough of this dedicated group of people.

The Rail Care Program also partners with local councils as well as street artists who continue to add their high-quality murals which brighten their locales.
