Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2025-2028
Please note this page talks about suicide and suicide prevention and may be upsetting or distressing for some people.
If you find this topic distressing or need support, we encourage you to contact Lifeline (13 11 14) or Beyond Blue (1300 224 636).
Each year we lose people to suicide. The impact of suicide and suicide-related distress is immense.
Suicide prevention is complex and there is no ‘one size fits all’. However we can work together to take action to reduce suicide and suicide-related distress in South Australia.
Background
As part of a shared responsibility approach to reduce suicide and suicide-related distress in South Australia, the State Government introduced the Suicide Prevention Act 2021 (the Act).
This was followed by the development of the South Australian Suicide Prevention Plan 2023-2026 (the Plan).
The Plan sets a path for compassionate, resilient and connected communities that support wellbeing and prevent suicide.
It also establishes the State Government’s guidelines for suicide prevention and the four-year goals to:
- reduce suicide-related distress and death by suicide in South Australia
- reduce distress that may contribute to suicide
- improve community understanding and responsiveness to prevent suicide.
Our Suicide Prevention Action Plan
As one of ten prescribed authorities as defined by the Act, we have prepared a Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2025-2028 (Action Plan) to:
- support the objectives of the Act and the Plan
- set the direction of suicide prevention in the Department for the next four years.
Our Action Plan considers suicide prevention for our staff as well as members of the community who engage with us.
It aims to:
- raise awareness and reduce the stigma attached to suicide, suicide-related distress and the risk factors contributing to suicide
- empower our employees, and those we engage with, to connect with or connect others to compassionate, safe and timely support
- promote health seeking and reduce barriers to seeking assistance
- improve our ‘postvention’ response.

Consultation
To inform development of our Action Plan, we sought feedback from:
- our staff
- external stakeholders
- the general public.
We greatly appreciate the feedback and insights received, particularly from those with lived and living experience.
Next Steps
A forward plan and supporting implementation plans will be created to guide delivery of the Action Plan’s initiatives.
Implementation will be overseen and agreed in consultation with the Suicide Prevention Action Plan Committee.
