Red trains good news for passengers
Monday, 4 June 2018
Train passengers who have noticed red and yellow trains running on the same line have some good news to look forward to.
The new-look red diesel trains have finished an overhaul, with a raft of passenger benefits including quieter engines at stations and better heating and air-conditioning.
Rolling stock engineer Peter Lindqvist says the trains are being upgraded, from the bogies that support the train body to the colour and decals, maintaining current safety standards.
“The colour change is part of a much bigger program to extend the life of these vehicles from the 1980s,” he says.
“The life-extension program maintains the current safety standards, improves passenger comfort and dramatically improves reliability.”
Upgraded components include the bogies, propulsion system, couplers, heating and air-conditioning, and the exterior.
Work on the vehicles is being done in stages, meaning minimal disruptions for passengers, after the state government delivered $50 million in funding for the project.
