Rail staff spring into action to rescue wayward echidna
Friday, 14 October 2022
Why did the echidna cross the train tracks? We’re not sure either, but a busy train station is no place for an echidna so Adelaide Railway Station staff had to spring into action earlier this week to rescue this misplaced mammal.
The echidna was spotted around 8pm on Wednesday and with a train due to arrive within minutes, crews acted quickly to start the rescue operation. Donning safety gloves, two staff members entered the pit of platform 2, where the little adventurer had burrowed itself into the ballast next to the track. The echidna was removed unharmed from the ballast and later collected by Animal Welfare officers.
Once safe and far away from trains, the lucky explorer, now named Snoot, was assessed and given a clean bill of health by staff at the Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre before being release back into the wild. Good news for all involved!
