Back to school road safety reminder

With children across the state heading back to school on Monday, 22 July, drivers are reminded to travel at 25km/h in school zones and when passing school buses picking up or dropping off children.

When children are present, there is a 25km/h speed limit between school zone signs and at crossings with flags or flashing lights.

Take care and be alert at all times. Children can be difficult to notice and are still developing their ability to judge the speed and distance of moving vehicles.

If you’re driving with children in your car, make sure that they are properly restrained and they get out safely when you have parked.

Follow the school’s procedures in designated drop-off zones and make sure you do not double park or park over driveways or crossings.

You might consider finding a park within easy walking distance of the school and walking for the last 100 metres. You’ll be just as quick and all children will be safer.

Additionally, DPTI reminds road users that a reduced speed limit of 25km/h remains in place on King William Street for the City South Tram Line Replacement Project roadworks. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time when travelling through the area.
