Landmarks have their lightbulb moment as South Aussies THINK! Road Safety
Monday, 6 May 2024
Landmarks across the state will light up this week as a poignant symbol of remembrance for the lives lost on South Australian roads.
To mark National Road Safety Week, which started yesterday Sunday 5 May, prominent landmarks and structures will be illuminated vibrant yellow throughout the week to encourage people to THINK! Road Safety as they drive by.
Regionally, City of Port Lincoln will light up its main street, Tasman Terrace, each night while the Kadina Town Hall and the Elemental Sculpture, Victor Harbor will glow yellow.
Many of Adelaide’s most famous landmarks will also turn THINK! yellow including the Entertainment Centre, Riverbank Bridge, the O-Bahn tunnel, Parliament House and the Convention Centre.
The use of yellow lighting along the road network aims to spread awareness of National Road Safety Week and encourage passing motorists to carefully consider their behaviour – sparking the important conversations necessary to create positive change and deliver safer outcomes for all road users.
Road safety is the responsibility of every person on the road, and this year’s theme ‘As all road safety is local, drive so others survive’ is a reminder to be respectful of all road users – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers – so that everyone arrives home safely.
Sadly, 117 lives were lost on South Australian roads last year while 824 people were seriously injured. So far this year, 33 lives have been lost on SA roads.
The THINK! Road Safety partnership program continues to deliver initiatives that build a culture of road safety, as part of the State Government’s commitment to South Australia’s Road Safety Action Plan 2023-25.
