Contracts awarded to accelerate zero-emission public transport network

The State Government is continuing to progress its commitment to transition to a zero-emission public transport system, with contracts awarded to determine the best technology solutions for bus and train services.

Ricardo Rail Pty Ltd has been awarded a contract to undertake a feasibility and technology study to assess the most appropriate zero-emission technologies for Adelaide Metro’s railcar fleet on the non-electrified rail lines.

The study will examine the feasibility and impact on existing services of alternative fuel solutions to power trains on the Belair, Outer Harbor and Grange rail lines and Port Dock spur line.

GHD and Evenergi have also been awarded a contract to develop a business case and transition plan for a zero-emission bus fleet across the Adelaide Metro network.

This work is fundamental to determining the best approach and funding requirements to achieve the State Government’s commitment to transition the bus fleet and depots to zero-emission by 2050.

Adelaide Metro continues to make significant steps towards a zero-emissions future, with the first full-battery electric bus currently undergoing testing as part of the transition to a hybrid and electric bus fleet.

A further five full-battery electric buses are on order, pending the results of this trial.

Work on both studies has already commenced and will play a key role in ensuring that future investment decisions in public transport positively support the State Government’s objective of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
