Safer travels between the Bend and Geranium

Friday, 27 June 2025
Key upgrades have been completed on approximately 65 kilometres of the Mallee Highway between Tailem Bend and Geranium, improving safety for all motorists.
Works include shoulder and road sealing, curve widening, new line marking and safety barrier installation to further prevent the risk of serious and fatal crashes.
This project on the Mallee Highway is part of a $168 million investment in South Australia under the national Road Safety Program, jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments (50:50), and forms part of the South Australian Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2026.
In the coming months, Audio Tactile Line Marking will be installed to reduce ‘run-off-road’ crashes.
Between 2019 and 2024, there were 11 crashes on this section of the Mallee Highway resulting in 13 injuries.
Around 1200 vehicles travel on this stretch of highway each day, with 300 of them being heavy vehicles, and these upgrades improve the travel and freight efficiency for all motorists.
This project has supported 80 full-time-equivalent jobs over the construction period.
