New workshop program to encourage friends and family to support Aboriginal Learner drivers

Tuesday, 30 January 2018

Help Aboriginal family, friends and community members with a learner’s permit to become safe, competent and confident drivers with the State Government’s new Teach ‘em Right workshop program.

The State Government initiative will contribute to the development of safe, competent and confident drivers by assisting Qualified Supervising Drivers to support the supervision of Aboriginal Learner driver’s on their journey through the Graduated Licensing Scheme.

The workshop program includes a comprehensive information pack and presentation kit that has been developed for the use of any interested person or organisation to deliver to an audience of Aboriginal people in urban, regional and remote South Australia.

The program will provide confidence to community members with an existing driver’s licence to be the Qualified Driving Supervisor and help their family or friends who hold a Learner’s Permit - by accompanying them on drives to reach their log book hours and assisting them in becoming safe, competent and confident drivers.

Drivers who hold a learner’s permit must have a Qualified Supervising Driver sitting next to them whenever they drive. This can be a qualified driving instructor or a family member or friend who has a current full driver's licence.

A Qualified Supervising Driver shows learner drivers how to operate their car, understand the road rules, checks progress, provides advice, and signs the learner driver logbook every time they drive.

Teach ‘em Right is a new program extended from the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure’s On the Right Track Remote driver licensing program for South Australian Aboriginal people and their communities.

The Program will be launched today at 12:30pm at the Port Adelaide Football Club, Brougham Place, Alberton and will include representatives of Power Aboriginal Programs from the Port Adelaide AFL Club who will provide a demonstration of supervised driving.
