Pledge to 'Drive So Others Survive' for National Road Safety Week

Road users are being asked to pledge to Drive So Others Survive and display a yellow ribbon to show support for road safety as part of National Road Safety Week.

The week runs from 30 April to 6 May and is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, highlighting the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it.

To mark the week, national and state icons, including South Australia’s own Adelaide Oval and Riverbank bridge, will turn yellow to honour those lost and demonstrate the nation’s pledge to drive safely.

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) supports this important annual safety initiative and encourages all road users to Drive So Others Survive by:

• driving as if your loved ones are on the road ahead
• removing all distractions and never using a mobile phone while behind the wheel
• being aware of road users and people working in the road environment who are vulnerable, slowing down and driving safely near them.

DPTI is placing a strong emphasis on the need to drive carefully around roadworks, to highlight the importance of protecting people placed in a vulnerable position by careless drivers.

A video featuring three DPTI staff gives the simple message that they are real people who simply want to go home to their families at the end of each day.

The whole South Australian community must work together to address the trauma caused by everyday use of the roads – regardless of the circumstances or the people involved.
