Wimmera Highway junction upgrades create safer and smoother access
Thursday, 14 September 2023
Work is now complete on upgrades to the Wimmera Highway near Naracoorte, including two new junctions.
The upgrades have improved freight access for higher productivity vehicles, supporting local business including Teys Australia’s Naracoorte meat processing facility and the QUBE Depot at Hynam.
The work included the construction of two new junctions on the Wimmera Highway, including the addition of sheltered right-turn lanes into both businesses, a dedicated left-turn deceleration into Teys Australia, new asphalt and line marking, new LED lighting along with new safety barriers and upgraded drainage.
The works formed part of the $14.6 million Rural Roads Package – Naracoorte Roundabouts project, to which the Australian Government has committed $11.8 million and the South Australian Government $2.8 million.
South Australian company Bardavcol undertook the work, which supported 25 full-time-equivalent jobs over the construction period.
The plans for the upgrades were developed in consultation with the community and local stakeholders. As part of the work, the speed limit has been reduced to 80 km/h to improve safety, with new signage installed along this section of the Wimmera Highway.
