A greener future for public transport in South Australia
Thursday, 29 September 2022
The State Government is powering towards a cleaner, greener public transport network, with the state’s first full-battery Scania electric bus to hit the streets within months.
Adelaide Metro’s first full battery electric Scania bus will begin operating on the public transport network from December, allowing testing of the new, zero-emissions technology across various public transport routes.
As well as being better for the environment, full battery electric buses offer a range of benefits for passengers.
They offer more space and better comfort and accessibility, while eliminating noise and fuel-based pollution.
Adelaide Metro expects to take delivery of additional, fully-electric buses over the next two years, contingent on funding and fleet arrangements.
There are currently 24 first generation electric hybrid buses in service across the Adelaide Metro network.
The first new-generation electric hybrid buses - with double the zero-emissions range - will commence operations in Adelaide during November this year.
The State Government has just taken delivery of what will be the last new diesel rigid bus for its public transport network, with all future rigid bus orders to target electric hybrid or – preferably - fully-electric vehicles.
The strategy required to deliver the full transition to a zero-emission bus fleet is currently being developed and this will ensure that we continue our delivery towards a cleaner, greener, zero-emission future for public transport in South Australia.
