Temporary weekend closures of the Gawler rail line
Friday, 24 November 2023
The Gawler rail line will temporarily close during two weekends in December to safely allow signalling works to complete new active pedestrian crossings at North Adelaide Railway Station and the Parklands, and to complete the Elizabeth turnback.
The line will be closed for night works at the following times:
- 10pm until last service Friday, 1 December 2023
- 10pm until last service Saturday, 2 December
- 10pm until last service Sunday, 3 December
In addition, the Gawler line will also be closed the following weekend, between first service Saturday, 16 December until last service Sunday 17 December 2023.
Substitute buses will run between Adelaide Railway Station and Gawler Central Railway Station during the temporary closures. Additional buses will operate on the last Adelaide to Gawler service on both Saturdays of the closure, to cater for any additional capacity.
The temporary closures will allow final construction and signalling works that cannot be safely undertaken while trains are operating in the rail corridor. These works will allow the activation of the pedestrian crossings at the North Adelaide Railway Station and the Park Lands, and the commissioning of the Elizabeth turnback.
An active pedestrian crossing means when a train is coming, the pedestrian gates will automatically close and alarms and signals will let pedestrians know it is unsafe to cross. When the train or trains have passed and it is safe to cross again, the alarms and signals will stop and the gates will re-open.
The Department apologises for the inconvenience during these temporary closures, and thanks commuters for their patience while these works are undertaken.
