Project benefits
Removing the level crossings will:
- make journeys safer and more reliable for everyone
- improve safety for local residents, motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and tram drivers
- provide new, safer and more accessible tram stops with improved pedestrian access
- improve connection and sense of community between the suburbs either side of the tram line
- elevate the Mike Turtur bikeway as a shared use path alongside the tram line
- create new community open space under the overpasses for locals to enjoy.
Upgrading the South Road Tram Overpass accommodates the construction of the T2D new lowered motorway.
Why remove level crossings?
Approximately 51,000 vehicles pass through the Marion Road and Cross Road level crossings (MAC) each day and roughly 25,600 vehicles pass through the Morphett Road level crossing (MTX). During peak hours the boom gates are down for up to 20 minutes each hour at MAC and 16 minutes at MTX.
Congestion at these crossings causes significant delays, queuing, increases traffic through local streets, an increase in potential accidents as drivers take more risks, and delays for public transport users.
Pedestrians and cyclists must also navigate multiple tram crossings to access public transport services, businesses, and community services.
Why an overpass?
Compared to an underpass, this approach will:
- have the shortest construction time and minimise disruptions
- significantly reduce the impacts to the surrounding environment
- improve connection and safety between the suburbs either side of the tram line
- provide new public open space under the tram line
- be delivered within the approved budget (an underpass cannot be delivered within the approved budget).
Tram line temporary closure
To fast-track the works and reduce the impact on local residents, businesses, and road and public transport users, the Glenelg tram line will be temporarily closed for approximately six months in the second half of 2025, allowing the overpasses to be constructed at the same time within the existing corridor.
