Tram Grade Separation Projects

Tram line temporary closure

The tram line is now closed between South Terrace and Glenelg, until early 2026. This will assist in fast-tracking construction and reduce impacts on local residents, businesses, road users. It will allow the overpasses to all be constructed at the same time during a single closure inside the tramline corridor. During this time, services will continue to operate between South Terrace and the Entertainment Centre, and on the Botanic and Festival lines.

We will run substitute buses between South Terrace and Glenelg during this time.

We will have the tram line ready for testing and commissioning late 2025. Services are scheduled to resume late January 2026 in time for the return of school.

Substitute bus timetables for the closures are available on the Adelaide Metro website

August road closures

To accommodate the works to improve our tram lines, several road closures will be required during August 2025.

Doing major work at three locations at once means we can fast-track construction of the overpasses and reduce impacts to the community, road and public transport users.

Road closures will be in place near:

  • Marion Road on Tuesday, 12 August, from 12.10am to 5am
  • Cross Road from Monday 11 August to Wednesday 13 August, every night from 9pm to 5am.

Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead as there will be detours in place during these closures.

About the project

We are removing three level crossings where the Glenelg tram line crosses:

  • Marion Road and Cross Road, Plympton
  • Morphett Road, Morphettville.

Removing the level crossings will:

  • make journeys safer and more reliable for everyone
  • improve safety for local residents, motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and tram drivers
  • provide new, safer and more accessible tram stops with improved pedestrian access
  • improve connection and sense of community between the suburbs either side of the tram line
  • elevate the Mike Turtur bikeway as a shared use path alongside the tram line
  • create new community open space under the overpasses for locals to enjoy.

We are also rebuilding the South Road Tram Overpass to accommodate the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project lowered motorway.

The Tram Grade Separation Projects Alliance (TGSPA) will deliver these projects together with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport.

Along with our Department, the alliance includes:

  • McConnell Dowell
  • CPB Contractors
  • Arup
  • Mott MacDonald
  • sub-Alliance partner Aurecon.

The Australian and South Australian Governments are jointly funding the Tram Grade Separation Projects.
