Marion Road and Cross Road Level Crossing Removals

As part of the Tram Grade Separation Projects (TGSP), we are removing the level crossings where the Glenelg tram line crosses Marion Road and Cross Road in Plympton.

Removing these level crossings will reduce traffic congestion and make your journey safer and more reliable.

The Australian and South Australian governments have jointly (50:50) funded $400 million towards the removals.

The Tram Grade Separation Projects Alliance (TGSPA) will deliver a new overpass for this project together with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport. The TGSPA will also deliver the Morphett Road Level Crossing Removal and South Road Tram Overpass Upgrade projects.

Latest updates

  • Design and preparation works are underway. Major construction works will commence in late 2024 and the level crossings will be removed by the end of 2025.
  • We will be holding community information sessions in September 2024. It will be an opportunity to introduce our project teams, share concept designs, provide more information about on-site activities and timings, and provide an opportunity for us to hear from you about our urban design.
  • The Tram Grade Separation Projects will support approximately 1,115 jobs per year during construction.

Project benefits

The TGSPA will build a new overpass for trams, cyclists and pedestrians in place of the congested tram level crossings at Marion Road and Cross Road.

The project will make your journey safer and more reliable meaning:

  • No more waiting at busy boom gates that are down up to 20 minutes each hour in peak
  • Less time in peak hour traffic
  • Smoother and safer trips for all
  • Cyclists and pedestrians can avoid two busy main roads
  • New open spaces for people to get together
  • New, safer and more accessible tram stops

Key project features

An overpass was determined in early 2023 as the best solution to removing these heavily congested level crossings. An overpass will:

  • have the shortest construction time, minimising disruption to locals, as well as road and public transport users.
  • significantly reduce the number of properties needing to be acquired - all properties identified as being required for the project have been directly communicated with
  • improve connection and safety between the suburbs either side of the tram line
  • provide new public open space under the tram line
  • be delivered within the approved budget (an underpass cannot be delivered within the approved budget.

Design elements

These artist impressions show the concept design for the overpass that includes the following key features:

  • new elevated Tram Stop 10 located over Marion Road and Cross Road
  • lifts and stairs on the western and eastern sides of Marion Road
  • new open community space and free-flow connections under the tram line
  • elevated Mike Turtur Bikeway and shared use path alongside the tram line

Urban design elements under the overpass are all still to be determined. This includes:

  • how the open space under the tram line will be used
  • landscaping and species selection
  • visual screens and buffers
  • paving and other materials
  • public art and street furniture.

Community feedback will continue to inform these elements through the detailed design.

Tram line temporary closure

To fast-track construction and reduce its impact on residents, businesses, and road and public transport users, we will be temporarily closing the Glenelg tram line between South Terrace and Glenelg.

We have worked hard to co-ordinate activities so that we can complete the major projects during the closure period.

The tram line closure will start in the second half of 2025. We will have the tram line ready for testing and commissioning late 2025 with services scheduled to resume late January 2026 in time for the return of school.

We will run substitute buses between South Terrace and Glenelg during this time.

Intersection Upgrades

As part of the project, the intersections at Marion Road and Anzac Highway and Cross Road and Marion Road will be upgraded to further improve the flow of traffic, ease congestion and improve travel times and safety.

The Marion Road and Anzac Highway intersection upgrade includes:

  • installation of two dedicated right turn lanes from Marion Road onto Anzac Highway
  • two dedicated signalised left turn lanes from Anzac Highway onto Marion Road
  • new and upgraded traffic signals, LED road lighting, line marking and drainage
  • new asphalt, kerb and gutter.

The Marion Road and Cross Road intersection upgrade includes:

  • installation of a new dedicated left turn lane from Marion Road onto Cross Road
  • installation of new dedicated left turn lane from Cross Road onto Marion Road
  • new and upgraded traffic signals, LED road lighting, line marking and drainage
  • new asphalt, kerb and gutters.

Community engagement

Community engagement will continue to play an important role throughout the project particularly as we work through the urban design elements of the overpass. We will continue to work closely with local Councils, interested stakeholders and our Marion Road and Cross Road Community Placemaking Reference Group (CPRG).

So far, we have held three meetings with our CPRG.

The CPRG is made up of a broad mix of local community representatives. Community members can provide input on urban design elements directly to the project team.
