Way2Go Bike Ed School Planning

If your school is participating in Way2Go Bike Ed this year, follow these steps to get your school ready.

  • Planning as school coordinator

The School Coordinator liaises with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport and service providers.

Download the School Coordinator Planning Checklist. This checklist shows the same steps as follows.

    Timing of delivery

The service provider delivering Way2Go Bike Ed on behalf of the Department for Infrastructure and Transport will confirm details, such as timings and student numbers.

At least 4 weeks before delivery

    Instructor to student ratios

    Consider instructor to student ratios:

    • Sessions 1–3 are ‘in-school’ sessions delivered within the school site. The instructor-to-student ratio is 1 to 10.
    • Sessions 4–6 are ‘on-road’ sessions delivered throughout the adjoining local road network. The instructor-to-student ratio is 1 to 5.
    • A school supervisor must attend all in-school and on-road sessions. The school supervisor can be a class teacher and is included in the above ratios.
    • If there are more than 25 students, the school must provide an extra adult supervisor that meet clearance requirements. This person will help with supervision ratios during on-road sessions.

    Order resources

    • 1 student learning journal per student.
    • 1 student participation certificate per student.

These resources are essential for participating in the Way2Go Bike Ed program. They are only available to schools approved to participate in the current school year.

    Provide class teachers with information

    • Send class teacher resource (lessons) to class teachers, including compulsory topics 1 and 2 and follow-up topics 3 and 4.
    • Clarify with teachers that topics 1 and 2 are essential to prepare for the program. They can adapt the lessons to align with resources and time available, as well as student needs. The only requirement is that the learning intentions are met. This allows the program to be as practical as possible and maximises riding time with instructors.

    • Supervise the return of equipment as requested by service provider, such as vests, bikes and helmets.
