Sculpture promotes a safer Main Street in Owen
Owen Community Centre Inc., together with Wakefield Regional Council and artist Chris Ormerod, developed a Living Neighbourhoods project to help slow traffic with the installation of a public artwork - a bronze sculpture of a wheat sheaf - in Main St, Owen.
The purpose of the project was to reduce traffic speeds and anti-social driving in the main street, to raise the awareness of people using the street and celebrate Owen’s agricultural roots. Work was also undertaken by the Council to narrow the road. The project was developed through the communities continued desire to make Owen a better and safer place to live.
Mayor Rodney Reid said, “As a resident in this street the work has already slowed traffic and creating a safer street crossing is a benefit not only to those wishing to use the playground but many who need to cross to access the Post Office or the school.“
The project was funded by DIT, supported by Wakefield Council and facilitated by Intermethod Pty Ltd.
