Grange Road Level Crossing Safety and Access Survey
About the project
As part of the South Australian Government’s commitment to road and rail safety, we are working to improve safety, access and traffic flow at the Grange Road, Hawthorn level crossing.
In the last four years (2019 to 2023) there were 49 incidents reported to us involving vehicles (including buses) queuing across the level crossing, entering the level crossing, or colliding with a boom gate, when a train is approaching.
We are investigating options including installing traffic signals to improve safety and access in the area.

Proposed safety treatments
Concept image of the proposed safety upgrades at the level crossing. These include:
- new traffic signals controlling access across the crossing to replace the existing stop signs
- new detectors linked to the traffic signals to pick up queuing traffic on Grange Road
- right turn from Verco Avenue removed (left in left out only) to prevent turning vehicle from blocking vehicles exiting the crossing.
