About the project
We are delivering upgrades to the Augusta Highway to improve safety and reliability for all road users.
These upgrades will improve freight productivity by reducing travel times for delivering goods to businesses and the community, as well as reducing operating costs for commercial vehicles.
The Augusta Highway is the key road corridor between Port Wakefield and Port Augusta and forms part of the National Land Transport Network, providing crucial connectivity to regional South Australia and interstate.
The upgrades will take place over 10 years, starting in 2023. It will include intersection upgrades, new overtaking lanes, and targeted safety treatments.
What's happening
Upgrades currently underway
Upgrading the Augusta Highway and Horrocks Pass Road junction at Winninowie and installing new northbound overtaking lanes on the Augusta Highway on the north and south sides of the junction.
Resurfacing on the Augusta Highway between Edinburgh Terrace and Zerna Road, Port Augusta.
Completed upgrades
Road resurfacing of approximately 5km of Augusta Highway, south of Merriton. Completed April 2025.
Replacement of bridge expansion joints on the railway bridge, Port Augusta. Completed December 2024.
Upgrade of the Augusta Highway and Flinders View Drive junction, Nelshaby. Completed December 2024.
Kerbing upgrades between Carlton Parade and Edinburgh Terrace, Port Augusta. Completed November 2024.
New road lighting at the intersection of Augusta Highway and Pareora Road, Port Wakefield. Completed November 2024.
Pavement rehabilitation and road widening between Carlton Parade and Northern Power Station Road, Port Augusta. Completed July 2024.
Shoulder upgrades at multiple locations between Lower Light and Redhill. Completed mid-2024.
Upgrade of the Stuart Highway, Eyre Highway and Augusta Highway junction in Port Augusta. Completed August 2023.
