Cape Hardy - Deep-Sea Port

The proposal

The proposal by Iron Road Limited is for a multi-billion dollar deep-sea port development at Cape Hardy. The port and associated infrastructure, which includes a 150 kilometre rail line, would service significant iron ore deposits located near the town of Wudinna on the Eyre Peninsula.

The proposed development has three interrelated components:

  • a deep sea water port, located about seven kilometres south of Port Neill, which would be capable of loading various bulk size carriers, including Capesize vessels, and exporting 30 million tonnes of iron ore and other products per year
  • a 150 kilometre infrastructure corridor, comprising a power transmission line, sea water supply pipeline and standard gauge rail line, to enable the transfer of products from the mine site to the port
  • a village to accommodate the longer term operational workforce for the mine - some 550 personnel - and related infrastructure, to be constructed in the township of Wudinna.
