Defence trail near Thistle Island, Spencer Golf

Defence trials involving a submarine will be carried out near Thistle Island in the South Australian Spencer Gulf during May.

The trials will take place in defence practice area 246 from 6:00 AM Thursday 15 May 2014 to 6:00 PM Sunday 18 May 2014.

Designated area R246 is bounded by a circle of radius 2 nautical miles cantered on a position Lat: 35° 00’05.706" South and Long: 136° 15’08.1603" East and also links between the circle and Thistle Island.

Call sign "Navy Range Control" at Thistle Island may be contacted on VHF Marine band 69 while trials are underway.

Mariners are advised to use extreme caution while navigating in the vicinity of the Defence Practice area and where possible to keep clear of the area at all times.

Vessels entering this defined area during the above period are liable to prosecution.
