Warning – shallow water along Murray - Lock 7

15 July 2013

Vessel operators on the River Murray are urged to operate with caution downstream of Lock 7.

Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) Acting Director of Transport Safety Regulation, Joe Rositano, is advising boat operators to travel with caution when approaching or exiting the downstream side of Lock 7, between Renmark and Mildura, south of Lake Victoria, New South Wales.

“SA Water has advised that due to high flows in recent years, sand has moved with the flow and built up just below Lock 7,” he said.

“Because the water level has returned to normal pool, this build up has left the river very shallow in the area of the lock.

“There is a narrow, shallow channel immediately downstream of the lock with between 300mm and 400mm of water available for navigation,” Mr Rositano said.

“Only vessels with a very shallow draft will be able to get into and out of the lock and travel further afield.”
