As a result of works to build a cycling and walking path over the Birkenhead Bridge, its bascule span will not be open to vessels from Tuesday 7 January to Tuesday 1 April this year.
The path being built is part of the new Loop Path that runs along the foreshore on the north and south side of Birkenhead Bridge.
The closure does not have an impact on the majority of vessels in the inner harbour as they are low enough to pass under the bridge.
However, the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) has consulted with the Australian Maritime and Fisheries Academy regarding the closure and alternative berthing arrangements have been made for other vessels impacted.
From 1 April 2014, on the completion of these works, the call out service will apply 7 days a week. Please note that from this date, any requests for an opening will require two hours advance notice.
Requests to open the Bascule span can be made by telephone 1800 018 313 or by using call sign 'Birkenhead Bridge' on VHF Radio, Channel 68 to the Traffic Management Centre of the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI).
DPTI thanks mariners for their patience during these works to revitalise the Port area.
