The recent figures show more than a third of the 56,892 boats registered in SA are over 26 years old.
Transport Safety Regulation Director, Brian Hemming, said the release of the data is an important reminder for all boat owners on the need for regular safety checks for many vessels.
“As your vessel ages, it is important to be even more vigilant with your pre-launch checks,” he said.
“Conditions on the water can change at any moment. Having confidence in your boat and being well prepared is crucial to the safety of you and your passengers.”
The 10-year snapshot of recreational boating in South Australia, prepared by the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, showed an increase in boat registrations of more than 16 per cent from 48,898 in 2000/01.
Open boats remains the most popular category followed by runabouts and half cabin vessels.
The popularity of traditional riverboats jumped from 50 to 208 vessels and cata/trimarans increased from 42 to 164.
Sailing boats and cabin cruisers fell in popularity.
