Pride of tuna fleet sunk

30 November 2010

apolloWe remind all recreational boaties to take care around big ships, as there continue to be near misses that can be avoided by staying well clear of them, particularly in the ports.

A recent example of the damage that big ships can do is the moored tuna boat that was sunk at Port Lincoln when a ship didn’t make it’s turn and collided with the fishing vessel – even with two tug boats trying to stop the collision.

While this sinking was due to the big ship losing it’s ability to navigate safely, it certainly highlights that big ships are dangerous for all other vessels that get in their way – simply due to their massive size and inability to change course.

The tuna fishing vessel, reportedly worth $20 million, is currently being salvaged by the owners under supervision of the department and an investigation is underway into the cause of the incident.
