South Australia’s waterways will be a hive of activity this holiday period so play it safe on the water to make a safe environment for all.
Be aware of your surroundings and ride safely over the busy holiday period.
Look out for river bank slumping on the River Murray and operate your vessels sensibly to reduce the effects of vessel wake rolling into the river banks.
Personal watercraft or 'Jet skis' will be in the focus of safety compliance over the festive season and right across the summer months.
Personal watercrafts are powerful machines - like high powered motorbikes on water - and can cause serious injury to the operator, passengers and other people enjoying water sport if used by inexperienced operators or used irresponsibly.
These machines are capable of speeds of more than 100 kilometres per hour on water.
People may think that the landing will be soft when they come off – it isn’t.
Careless operation of a personal watercraft now carries a maximum penalty of 12 months imprisonment or a $2500 fine. Dangerous operation carries the maximum penalty of 2 years jail.
Report any hazards on the River Murray to Murray Watch on 8531 0710.
