Three winched to safety off Cape Jervis

"It's terrifying being trapped underneath the boat and not sure if you'll be able to get out."

Three people have been rescued by helicopter after their boat capsized in Backstairs Passage off Cape Jervis.

In the afternoon of 2 December 2013 police were alerted to an overturned boat in the stretch of water between Cape Jervis and Kangaroo Island.

The 59-year-old woman and two men,  59 and 51 from Kangarilla and Seacombe Heights swum to shore before being winched to safety, SA Police News reports.

The boat was overturned by large waves, the women told The Advertiser.

"The waves kept getting bigger and the last one was just a freak wave and tipped us over," she said.

"It's terrifying being trapped underneath the boat and not sure if you'll be able to get out.

"We got washed to shore and just stayed there ... I'm really traumatised"

The woman The Advertiser they had been fishing in the area without incident for about 30 years.

The three were all checked by SA Ambulance and managed to escape without major  injuries.
