Checks on vessels in the waters surrounding Kangaroo Island show not enough operators are carrying the correct safety equipment.
During January 43 boats were checked at various boat ramps. Most of the boats were there to go fishing.
Over half of the vessels (26) had issues and nine expiation notices were issued. Six boats were stopped from launching.
Fifteen Vessels did not have the safety equipment need to ensure safety, including flares, fire extinguishers and adequate life jackets.
Failure to carry one or two items of safety gear can result in an expiation of $105 plus a $60 victims of crime levy. This increases to $210 (plus $60 levy) when three to four items of safety equipment are missing.
In total eight expiations were issued for failure to carry safety equipment, adding up to $1,425 in fines.
