Current path closures and detours

Main South Road Darlington – change to cyclist access, July 2014

Pedestrian and cyclist access after construction

Construction will require the temporary, short term and long term closure of some pedestrian paths and cycleways along the Southern Expressway and at bridges crossing the expressway.

Where detours are required, signage will be in place to guide pedestrians and cyclists to alternative routes.  The shared use path and veloway will be affected during construction generally at the following locations.

  • between Marion and Seacombe roads
  • at Reynella interchange, including the Patrick Jonker Veloway and Coast to Vines trail
  • the shared path at Beach Road interchange, including Elizabeth Road
  • Coast to Vines trail at Hackham.

Cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to consult the online Cycle Instead Journey Planner at http://maps.sa.gov.au/cycleinstead to find the best way around closures during construction.  The planner will be kept up to date as the works progress.

In addition, one pedestrian bridge is being extended across the duplicated expressway and will be completed by mid 2014, with some restrictions in place during construction.

A new shared use recreational path will be built along the western side of the expressway, taking advantage of the many formal and informal pathways already in place - offering an alternative to the eastern veloway and shared path on the eastern side.

Works will be scheduled to ensure the veloway is available for special events, such as the Tour Down Under.

Current path closures and detours

  • Sugarbush Path pedestrian footbridge, Reynella - Reopened on Friday, 20 June 2014.
  • Coast to Vines shared use path at Reynella Interchange - Following the re-opening of Lander Road, the Coast to Vines Rail Trail will be closed under the expressway south of Lander Road to progress earthworks at this location. Pedestrian and cyclists will be detoured via Lander Road during this time.
  • Beach Road, Noarlunga has changed pedestrian access in the vicinity of the expressway bridge. Download the detour map [217 KB] for more details.

Main South Road Darlington – change to cyclist access, July 2014

Cyclist access on a short section of the northbound carriageway of Main South Road, Darlington, will be temporarily changed from Wednesday 2 July until late July / early August 2014 due to works associated with the Southern Expressway Duplication project – see map below for details.

Main South Road Darlington change to cyclist access map 2 July 2014

The change will be due to the placement of safety barriers in the existing cycling lane between the expressway entrance and opposite Franklin Avenue, to enable pavement reinstatement works to be undertaken in this location. As a result, access for cyclists along this section of road (approx. 80 metres) will be via the kerbside lane and shared with motorists. The speed limit will be reduced to 60km/h in this area.

All changes to traffic conditions will be clearly marked, with signage in place.

If you have any questions regarding these works please contact the project team by email: SEDenquiries@bajvsed.com.au or by calling 1300 626 097.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during these important infrastructure works.

Cyclist access changes, Panalatinga Interchange

From mid afternoon on 2 July 2014, cyclists using the shared path adjacent Main South Road at Panalatinga Interchange, Reynella, will be permanently diverted onto the new veloway in this area. Please see the map below for further details.

Diversion of the veloway at Panalatinga

The permanent diversion is to enable works to progress with connecting the entrance of the newly constructed northbound flyover on-ramp to the Panalatinga intersection at Reynella.

There is a section of unsealed, gravel pathway of approximately 500 metres and cyclists will be required to adhere to reduced travel speeds when approaching and travelling through this area.

All changes to ground conditions including diversions and reduced travel speeds will be clearly marked, with signage in place.

If you have any questions regarding these works please contact the project team by email: SEDenquiries@bajvsed.com.au or by calling 1300 626 097.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during these important infrastructure works.

Changes to veloway speeds between Darlington Escarpment and Panalatinga Interchange

From mid April to late May 2014, works to install electrical and communications cables will be undertaken adjacent the veloway between the Darlington Escarpment and Panalatinga Interchange.

Access to the veloway will remain unchanged throughout the works with intermittent changes to travelling speeds in place as required.

Signage will be in place to advise of changed speeds and work zones. Works will be undertaken during normal construction hours of 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday.

For further information, please contact the project team by calling 1300 626 097.
