Rail R U OK?Day: a chat can transform a workmate's journey
19 April 2017
On Thursday 20 April 2017, our department will once again celebrate the industry-wide mental health initiative Rail R U OK?Day.
On Rail R U OK?Day – and every day – we ask you to find the time and courage to have a chat that has the power to transform a workmate’s journey, from feeling stressed to feeling supported.
Our rail workers know better than anyone else the pressures they face in their day-to-day jobs, so DPTI’s proud, once again, to share a video that shares moving accounts from our dedicated people.
Their resilience in handling life’s ups and downs and their courage to talk openly about traumatic experiences is nothing short of inspirational and encapsulates the spirit of Rail R U OK?Day. We hope all members of our rail team do the same and it all starts with the simple question: ‘are you OK?’
Across the country, a host of events are being held to mark this vital occasion. We encourage people to find out how they can get involved to show their support.
More than a one-day event, a number of activities will follow throughout the year, including Rail Safety Week in August, and ongoing initiatives such as the RailRes app which is available to download for free, giving rail staff tools and support to cope with workplace trauma and build long term resilience to help stay healthy.
Rail R U OK?Day is a national campaign coordinated by TrackSAFE, in collaboration with suicide prevention group R U OK?. Its ultimate goal is breaking down the stigma surrounding depression, anxiety and mental trauma.
Open and honest conversations between staff have the power to transform our railway workplaces into strong and spirited communities, and decrease the potential for self-harm among rail employees and other first-responders witnessing tragic work episodes such as suicides and horrific accidents.
