Girls, do you think you have what it takes to be an Olympic cycling champion?
Soon you will have a chance to find out. The South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) is launching its female only Talent Search events at the Santos Tour Down Under 2017 billed as the Girls Pedal2Podium (GP2P2017). Following on from the previous years Cycling Champions promotion the 2017 program is targeting females only, to identify them for the state development pathway.
Athletes aged between 12 and 20, and especially girls in the under-15 age group, are invited to attend the Tour village (known as the Adelaide City Council Village). The tests will measure athletes' speed, power and strength and will include six seconds and two-minute sprints on stationary Watt bikes.
SASI Talent Search Coordinator Susan Bassett will manage the program during the Tour Down Under. She said the tests will help to identify talented young female athetes with the potential to be part of a very successful cycling program.
"With all the hype of the Tour Down Under and the increasing number of successful female cycling athletes we hope to attract a number of young talented females to the Girls Pedal2Podium and will hopefully uncover the next Anna Meares'' she said.
There also will be prizes on offer for athletes who can generate the highest number of Watts/ greatest cadence for specific age groups.
At the end of testing all of the athlete data will be forwarded to the SASI Cycling coaches for further evaluation with promising athletes invited to attend SASI for more testing.
