Don’t put safety second when out on the water this summer

CONNECT - Message from the Chief Executive

8 December 2015

Boat operators are being encouraged to put safety first before heading out on the water this summer as the weather starts to warm up.

The Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said with hot conditions forecast for the weekend many would grab the chance to take the boat out.

“I would urge anyone thinking of heading out on the water not to be complacent when it comes to safety,” Mr Mullighan said.

“You can never be too experienced or in too much of a hurry to skip your planning and preparation.

“Make sure your boat is seaworthy and contains the proper safety equipment, the engine is maintained and that you are familiar with weather conditions.

“You should never be complacent about expiry dates on life-saving safety equipment such as Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), flares and fire extinguishers.”

The safety message coincides with a new Government campaign to encourage everyone out of the water to wear a personal flotation device or PFD.

“There is a reason PFDs are more commonly known as lifejackets and that is because they can save your life,” Mr Mullighan said.

“So too can the ability to communicate when you are on the water but you won’t always have reception for a mobile phone so make sure you have a radio.

“Log on with the SES Volunteer Marine Rescue before you set off and give them all the details of your trip, including where you are going, who is with you and when you will be back.

“Not only does this allow you to test your radio but it also gives search crews a starting point should you fail to return.

“If you don’t have a marine radio, ensure you tell someone where you are going and when you think you will return.”
