Work Underway to Contain Shipping Container Leak

CONNECT - Message from the Chief Executive

8 May 2015

Work to contain a leaking container of formic acid onboard the vessel Maersk Launceston near Outer Harbor is now well underway.

The ship is docked at berth 6, Outer Harbor. The leak was stopped and the MFS is currently working to make the container safe for removal and minimise any contamination risk.

The MFS vessel MV Gallantry is in place to ensure emergency fire coverage and to support the cleanup operation.

An EPA assessment has determined that wildlife is not expected to be impacted.

Flinders Ports is working with the agencies and advises that there are no impacts to shipping operations.

When the container is safe it will be removed by the MFS and safely disposed of. The ship will also be checked to ensure it is safe.
