ABS – A safer choice for motorcyclists
11 June 2015
The State government is encouraging motorcyclists to choose motorcycles fitted with anti-lock braking (ABS) technology that could significantly improve their safety.
Seven lives could have been saved and 57 serious injuries avoided in 2012 if all South Australian motorcycles had been fitted with anti-lock braking technology.
This information comes from the latest report from the Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) at the University of Adelaide which investigated the benefits of ABS on motorcyclists.
Saving seven lives and avoiding 57 serious injuries would have meant a reduction of up to 50 per cent of South Australia’s serious motorcycle casualties that year.
The State Government’s new campaign aims to raise awareness among motorcycle riders about the benefits of ABS and to encourage them to consider this safety feature when choosing a new bike.
As part of the campaign, ABS swing tags are being supplied to all new motorcycle dealerships in South Australia to enable ABS-fitted motorcycles to be clearly identified, and a video has been released to explain the benefits.
Brochures and the video will be made available for riders who take part in a Rider Safe motorcycle rider training course. Seven new ABS equipped motorcycles have been purchased for at Rider Safe training locations across the State.
