Walk Safely to School Day

21 May 2015

Parents are encouraged to walk their primary school children to school on Friday 22 May to help teach them safe pedestrian behaviour and road awareness.

It’s important for parents to equip their children with the practical skills needed to safely navigate roads, cross at intersections and be a responsible pedestrian. Walking them to school helps them develop the vital road crossing skills they will need when they are old enough to walk or ride to school on their own.

The national event is now in its 16th year. For further information visit the National Walk Safely to School Day website

Another positive to this event is that walking regularly at an early age has long term health benefits, with recent studies showing that walking to school is associated with higher overall physical activity throughout the day.
