Norwood roundabouts safer for cyclists

Construction to modify roundabouts along Beulah Road at Norwood will start in early May with the aim of significantly improving cyclist safety.


The improvements, which are being undertaken by the Department in partnership with the cities of Norwood, Payneham & St Peters and Burnside, are part of the Norwood Bicycle Boulevard project. The boulevard concept promotes cycling on low-traffic routes on local roads as a safer alternative to cycling on busy arterial roads. 

The Beulah Road project will reduce the speed of vehicles entering the roundabouts, creating a low-speed environment in which bicycles can mix safely with motor vehicle traffic. The roundabouts are at the intersections with Sydenham Road, Edward Street, George Street and Queen Street. The changes will be complemented by the upgrade of existing bicycle lanes on Rundle Street in Kent Town.

The project is designed to address the crash history at these intersections. Between 2004 and 2013 many crashes involving cyclists were reported to South Australia Police:

  • Beulah Road/Sydenham Road roundabout - 21 crashes, including 13 cyclist casualties (one of the highest recorded crash figures for an intersection in South Australia over this time period)
  • Beulah Road/Edward Street roundabout - 8 crashes, including 4 cyclist casualties
  • Beulah Road/George Street roundabout - 14 crashes, including 4 cyclist casualties
  • Beulah Road/Queen Street roundabout - 6 crashes, including 4 cyclist casualties.

In 80 per cent of the crashes a driver entering the roundabout failed to give way to a cyclist circulating the roundabout.

The modifications to the roundabouts will be done within the existing road area. They will not affect the current number of on-road car park spaces, but the length of some spaces will be slightly modified.

The $1.6 million safety improvements are supported by the State Government’s Road Safety Fund.

Construction work is scheduled for completion by the end of June 2015, weather permitting.To minimise traffic impacts, construction work will be undertaken as a combination of day and night works. Night works will be managed to minimise disturbance to the local community as much as possible and adjacent residents will be provided advance notice. Speed, lane and parking restrictions will be in place during construction and motorists are asked to use extra caution when workers are on site.
