Cast off boat registration labels from 1 September

Registration labels will no longer be required from 1 September 2023, streamlining the registration process for boat owners across SA.

This change will remove the current requirement for boaties to replace and display labels each year, while also eliminating the environmental impact of the more than 60,000 labels printed annually.

The Department has also listened to feedback from boaties about the appearance of labels, which can fade and crack over time, particularly given boats are often exposed to harsh weather conditions.

The registration process will remain the same, with a range of easy options to register to suit all boat owners – including online, in person at a Service SA centre, over the phone or via mail.

Boat owners will also continue to receive registration renewal notices approximately six weeks before expiry and a Certificate of Registration in the mail as proof of registration once paid.

Marine Safety Officers regularly monitor boat ramps and waterways across the state, to ensure all boaties are taking their safety responsibilities seriously, including checking licence and boat registrations are up to date.

Boat owners are responsible for ensuring their boat is registered. Penalties apply for operating an unregistered boat.
