Transport study for Kangaroo Island and Fleurieu Peninsula
Monday, 17 July 2023
The State Government is undertaking a transport study for the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island to inform future transport planning and investment in the region.
The study will consider key issues and opportunities to improve transport, such as road safety and efficiency, and its ability to support liveability and population and economic growth.
It will encompass the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island areas. This region has been selected for the study because of strong projected population growth in the outer southern suburbs and on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and the need to ensure safe and efficient connectivity to these areas.
In addition to residential growth, the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island are key destinations for visitors and tourism and have important routes for South Australian freight including dairy, livestock, timber and wine.
A contract to carry out the study has been offered to WSP Australia Pty Ltd. WSP is a globally recognised professional services consulting firm, with an office in Adelaide employing around 90 South Australians.
This study will seek to identify potential transport improvements and build on the existing significant investment underway by the Australian and South Australian Governments in the southern regions, including:
- $685 million for the Main South Road and Victor Harbor Road duplications, and $20 million for new overtaking lanes on Main South Road between Myponga and Cape Jervis
- the $120 million Majors Road Interchange Upgrade to improve connectivity to the Southern Expressway
- Long Valley Road improvements works underway to install new overtaking lanes, which form part of the $155 million South Australian Rural Roads Safety Package and the $150 million Adelaide Hills Productivity and Road Safety Package
- the $40 million Kangaroo Island Road Upgrades project
- $37 million for the Kangaroo Island Ports project for upgrades at Cape Jervis and Penneshaw.
This investment will be complemented by an additional $1.5 million per annum for Kangaroo Island road improvements announced in the 2023-24 State Budget, which forms part of the South Australian Government’s $98 million road safety package.
An important part of the study will be consultation with the community and other key stakeholders. More information about how to get involved will be provided when available.
