Major intersection to flow more freely
Tuesday, 13 December 2022
Traffic has switched onto the new configuration of the upgraded Cross Road and Fullarton Road intersection for the first time this morning.
The Australian and South Australian governments have jointly (50:50) funded $61 million towards the project, which will improve travel times and road safety, increase intersection capacity and enhance network reliability. The project is supporting approximately 65 jobs per year, averaged over the life of the construction period.
The project includes:
- The widening of Cross Road, with the installation of dedicated right turn lane into Fullarton Road on both approaches, three through lanes on both approaches, a dedicated left turn slip lane onto Fullarton Road (northbound) and dual left turn lanes onto Fullarton Road (southbound);
- Widening of Fullarton Road, with the installation of dedicated right turn lanes into Cross Road on both approaches, three through lanes on both approaches, a dedicated left turn slip lane onto Cross Road (westbound) and a shared through and left turn lane onto Cross Road (eastbound);
- Upgrades and relocation of bus stops on the north and south sides of Cross Road;
- Upgraded pedestrian crossings within the intersection;
- New and upgraded traffic signals, pavement, road lighting, line marking and drainage.
Work to relocate and repurpose the Urrbrae Gatehouse continues, following its delicate deconstruction earlier in the year, with the relocation expected to be completed in late 2023.
Following the traffic switch, motorists are advised to take extra care when driving through the area and be aware of the changed traffic conditions.
Works to continue include installation of asphalt, line marking, median kerbing, drainage installation, traffic signal modifications, footpaths, landscaping and street lighting. Speed and lane restrictions will remain in place during these works.
The intersection upgrade is expected to be completed in early 2023, weather permitting.
