DPTI is marking the 125th anniversary of South Australia’s nation-leading legislation that allowed women to vote in general elections and stand as Members of Parliament by releasing an interactive version of a timeline showing the progression of women within the department.
The official anniversary of the legislation is December 18.
P.R.M. Blackwell is believed to have been the first woman to join the department, taking the role of stenographer, in 1919.
It wasn't until 1978 that the first female engineer joined the team and from there the gender balance in senior and non-traditional roles started to develop.
The new DPTI timeline shows key female appointments, including Jan Ferguson, who became the department's first female executive in 1994, through to the current day when DPTI’s executive management team is a healthy 50/50 gender split.
