Temporary throw screens to be installed on Southern Expressway bridges

Tuesday, 26 June 2018

Temporary throw screens will be installed on all remaining bridges over the Southern Expressway to prevent rock throwing in the area and improve safety for road users until permanent screens are installed.

The installation of the temporary throw screens will begin in three weeks and will take approximately two months to complete, weather permitting.

This work is occurring in alongside the implementation of a range of other preventative safety measures in the area, including the:

  • upgrade of CCTV cameras along the Southern Expressway. CCTV camera upgrades have been completed at the Flaxmill Road and Beach Road bridges.
  • installation of mesh over loose rocks near the Honeypot Road bridge has been completed, with works to install mesh and fencing over and around rock embankments now set to begin at the Beach Road bridge; and
  • completion of bridge numbering along the Southern Expressway to make it easier to report alleged instances of rock throwing to SAPOL.

The department is continuing to work with SAPOL and other stakeholders on all safety measures associated with this issue.

Anyone who witnesses rock throwing or suspicious activity around the Southern Expressway should contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 at the time of the incident so patrols can be deployed in the area.
