State-Wide Road Improvement and Renewal Works

What are the works?

The Department is responsible for maintaining and improving more than 12,000 kilometres of sealed roads across South Australia, including 2,800 km of National highways, to ensure safe, reliable and efficient travel for all road users.

To ensure the network remains fit for purpose, DPTI oversees delivery of a range of minor and major enhancement works, and annual maintenance renewal works across the network,  including:

  • Road pavement rehabilitation or resurfacing works
  • Minor improvement projects such as intersection upgrades, Blackspot Program projects and shoulder sealing works
  • Major improvement projects such as North South Corridor projects, Victor Harbor Road Duplication and Joy Baluch AM Bridge.

Why have some roads had no work on them for a number of years?

Roads are constructed with pavement and surfacing materials. The road pavement provides the necessary structural strength for durability, and the surfacing provides the smooth trafficable layer for good riding experience. Pavement has a longer life than the surfacing, which needs to be renewed periodically depending on the type of materials, traffic volumes and types of vehicles using the road. The typical useful life of pavement is between 40 to 70 years and surfacing between 20 to 30 years.

Interactive Map

The map below shows both historic (since 1995) and planned road improvement and rehabilitation works undertaken across the State sealed road network. Planned works include those to be completed in the current financial year and those on the Forward Works Program that will be scheduled for delivery over coming years subject to funding.

The interactive map allows you to zoom into a specific location, click on a coloured dot or link and find out more about when a project was undertaken or future planned works. Click here for the full page version.

The map will be updated annually (September/October) as works are completed and new work programs are released.

What can I expect?

DPTI is committed to keeping impacts of construction works to a minimum and to keep the community informed of upcoming works. As works progress road users and residents may experience:

  • Temporary lane closures, parking restrictions or detours
  • Traffic and pedestrian management
  • Increased traffic in and around local streets due to detours
  • Noise and dust from construction activity
  • Excavation work on roads or footpaths

DPTI will ensure affected residents, businesses and road users are made aware of any works prior to commencement via the media, letter drops and/or road signs advising of upcoming works.
