Majors Road Interchange

About the project

The Australian and South Australian Governments are jointly funding (50:50) the $120 million construction of new on/off ramps for the Southern Expressway at Majors Road. The project is expected to support approximately 245 jobs per year, averaged over the life of the construction period.

Majors Road is an important arterial road, providing a key connection between Lonsdale Road and Main South Road. Majors Road currently carries approximately 13,200 vehicles per day. The Southern Expressway carries approximately 74,000 vehicles per day between Darlington and the Reynella interchange and supports economic activity in Adelaide’s southern commercial and industrial areas, and facilitates tourist travel on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Majors Road Interchange Project will provide commuters in the southern suburbs further access to the Southern Expressway, whilst providing all commuters improved access to Glenthorne National Park - Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility and Southern Soccer Facility from the Southern Expressway.

Final project completion is expected at the end of 2025.

Concept design

Key changes to the design include:

  • widening of Majors Road from the Southern Expressway to Lonsdale Highway / Ocean Boulevard to provide two through lanes in both directions;
  • tree planting along the Shared Use Path next to Majors Road to improve amenity and achieve 50% shade coverage (upon maturity);
  • putting the powerlines underground along this section of Majors Road; and
  • realignment of the Patrick Jonker Veloway to improve the path orientation and sightlines.

Glenthorne National Park - Ityamaiitpinna Yarta

The concept design has been developed to include minimal impact to the Glenthorne National Park - Ityamaiitpinna Yarta. It also provides for no impact to significant vegetation and no impact to Glenthorne Farm. There is also no impact to the O’Halloran Hill Recreational Park.

Works are in full swing at the new Majors Road Interchange with the successful completion of the concrete pour for the new widened Majors Road bridge deck and the upcoming commencement of earthworks on the northern side of Majors Road.

Night works and Majors Road traffic switch

To prepare for the commencement of earthworks, we will be switching traffic to the southern side of Majors Road between Adams Road and Lonsdale Road/Ocean Boulevard (new widened section) with one lane of traffic maintained in each direction.

Traffic switch works will be undertaken at night on Saturday 9 November 2024, from 7pm until 5am.

To safely undertake these works, we will also move the temporary Majors Road Shared Use Path (SUP) to its permanent position, on the southern side of Majors Road.

Traffic switch works will be undertaken at night on Saturday 9 November 2024, from 7pm until 5am.

The change in traffic flow (to the southern side of Majors Road) and the SUP move will be in place from 5am Sunday 10 November 2024, weather permitting.

Bridge widening works

We are continuing bridge widening works on and underneath the bridge including the installation of safety barriers on the bridge.

To safely undertake these works, from Monday 11 November 2024 until mid-December 2024 additional speed and lane restrictions will be required on the Southern Expressway at night.

Please observe speed limits, follow local traffic controller instructions when travelling through the area.

Please plan ahead and expect some delays.

Emergency services access on the Southern Expressway and Majors Road will be maintained at all times during all works.

Refer to the works notice for additional information.
